Long term exposure to asbestos results in deposition of the fine fibers of mineral dust in the lungs. This causes fibrosis of lungs which results in difficulty in breathing.
Risk factors include:
Long time exposure to products or buildings that have asbestos
Persons who worked in construction and in buildings built with asbestos in the 70s through the 90s have a higher risk of having inhaled asbestos
Smokers have a higher risk of developing asbestosis as they are more susceptible
People in careers that expose them to asbestos such as welders, janitors and plumbers,shipyard workers
